Reiss’s Pieces

Just the other day, I had had enough of the lousy weather! I don’t really mind the snow and when the time is appropriate, I don’t mind the rain. But what I just hate is a very gray day that is made even worse by slush that is falling from the sky. It is bad enough on the roads or on the path from my house to my car, but falling from the sky is just too much! So, I sat down and tried to think of something that I could do. Of course, Malcolm was going skiing and as always he will ski regardless of how bad I think the conditions are! And after I turned on the T.V. I couldn’t find anything that I wanted to watch. I consider myself someone who enjoys most sports but basketball from college through the pros is just too much for me, especially when it was on what appeared to be, almost every channel. So, what to do?

Well, believe it or not, I had the best day imaginable and here is what I did. From 11am to 5:30pm, I sat and watched every single episode of Downton Abbey that I own! I actually think that what I owned was year one and year two, but I am not absolutely sure. What I do know is that some of the episodes I had seen before but it made no difference. I loved every single minute. In fact, when it was over I was disappointed that I didn’t have the next two years worth right then and there! In fact, just as a side note, if I had had even more, I probably would have continued to watch well into the night.

I am sure that there are probably some of you who are wondering how anyone could watch a Public Television program, without a break, for an entire day. Well, let me tell you that once you watch this fascinating program – about a family of the British aristocracy and of course, all those who work “downstairs” for them as well – you will be hooked! I am happy to tell you that we will be able to find out what is happening next to the Crawley family and all their many friends, relatives and of course, servants, in 2015. And for those of us who can hardly wait, I believe you can buy or rent DVDs for any and all of the past four years. Believe me when I tell you that I will definitely be buying the two years that I don’t already own. And when I get them, I will plan another day where I am absorbed and find myself back with them once again.

I have always been a history buff and find it interesting to follow the lives of those who have gone before me. And I find this series not just a wonderful saga about a certain family, I think that the acting and characters are absolutely wonderful. And my hero of the day is Maggie Smith. She continues to be absolutely fantastic. And if you already haven’t done so, give Downton Abbey a try and be sure and let me know what you think.
