Dolores (Kubicza) D’Amico

MONTPELIER, VT – Dolores (Kubicza) D’Amico, 93, formerly of Wolcott, CT passed away Thursday, May 30, at the Barre Gardens Nursing and Rehab Center in Barre, VT, where she resided since 2017.

She was born on April 23, 1931, in Middletown, CT, the daughter of Leslie and Alice (Mikucka) Kubicza. After high school Dolores joined the Felician Sisters Convent in Enfield, CT where she served as a Catholic nun for more than 20 years. Her commitment to her faith in God and love of education was the basis of her life.

She received her undergraduate degree from Fairfield University and a Masters Degree in Education from Fordham University, both Jesuit Catholic institutions.

After leaving the convent, Dolores married Florio D’Amico “Phil the Barber,” on April 5, 1975, and they made their home in Wolcott, CT. Sadly, Phil predeceased her in 1987 and she became the matriarch of a large, Italian family.

She was a beloved elementary school teacher, retiring from Wakelee School after 25 years. Even after retirement she volunteered as a reading specialist at the Children’s Community School in Waterbury, CT. In 2011, Dolores was recognized by the Connecticut General Assembly where she was presented the President’s Award for Volunteerism at the Children’s Community School.

Survivors include her children, Bruce D’Amico and his wife Sandy of Waterbury, VT, Judy May and her husband Bill of Middlesex, VT, and Rose Pelchuck and her husband Greg of Calais, VT. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, Sandra, Michael E., Jeffrey, Rebecca, Michael, Robert, Marc, Brian, Shannon, Danielle and Vincent; 13 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three of her children, James D’Amico, Lucille Shearer, and Philip D’Amico, and a grandson, Anthony D’Amico.

There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, June 7 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Montpelier, VT. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury, CT on Monday, June 10 at 1:00 p.m.
