Barbara A. Wilkins

Devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Dedicated Harley-Davidson Dealer

BARBARA A. WILKINS, 94, a beloved figure in the Barre, Vermont community and a dedicated Harley-Davidson dealer since 1947, passed away on December 9, 2023. Born on April 1, 1929, in Barre Vermont to Anthony and Celia Romanos Corey, Barbara’s life was marked by a deep commitment to family, community, and the Harley-Davidson legacy.

Barbara and Harry J. Wilkins met while she was working at her parents’ business, Prosperity Dry Cleaners in Barre, Vermont. Their love story unfolded, and they were joyfully united in marriage on May 16, 1947.  Their family grew with the arrival of a set of twins, Ann and Alan. Together, Barbara and Harry embarked on a remarkable journey as proud owners of Wilkins Harley-Davidson dealership in Barre. Their union was a true partnership in every sense, as they ran the dealership with unparalleled passion and dedication, creating a legacy that would endure for decades.

Known as the backbone of the business, Barbara’s friendly and kind nature made her a cherished figure at the dealership. Customers affectionately referred to her as “Barb,” and her caring and knowledgeable assistance endeared her to all who walked through the dealership doors. She not only knew the ins and outs of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and parts, but also had a special talent for making customers feel at home. In the earlier days at the old shop on Farwell Street, Barbara would even serve bologna sandwiches and treats to customers around lunchtime, making their visits memorable. Beyond her expertise in Harley-Davidson products, Barbara was a compassionate listener, always ready to lend an ear to those who sought comfort or camaraderie. The customers who knew her will deeply miss her warm presence and the genuine connections she cultivated over the years.

Beyond the dealership, Barbara was a member of St. Monica’s Church. Her love for her church mirrored her love for the community, and her impact extended beyond business into the hearts of those she served. Barbara’s kitchen table became a symbol of love and warmth with simple joys of soft butter and the enticing aroma of Lebanese cooking that filled the air.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry, her son, Alan, and a great-grandson, Winston C. Lyon. Also preceding her in passing are her parents, Anthony and Celia, along with her nephew Jeffrey Behuniak. Joining them in eternal rest are her siblings, Angeline Ennis, Marlene Sage, Merlene Ryan, Evelyn Corey, and her twin brother Roger Corey.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Ann (Wilkins) Lyon and her husband William; grandchildren Kimberly Lyon Abare and her husband David, John Lyon and his wife Jennifer; and great-grandchildren David Abare, and Garrett Abare, and Eleanor Lyon; her nieces and nephews, Roberta Ennis Markure, Robert Ennis and wife Debbie, Rebecca Ennis; Laura Ryan Lilibridge and wife Terri, Linda Behuniak Washington, Deborah Behuniak Haydock, and Steve Behuniak, Darlene (Mercier) Bump, Junior and Jeanne Wilkins and son, Chip, Lorna Murray, Gary and Jay Wilkin and a wide circle of friends in the Barre, Vermont community.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth in memory of her great-grandson Winston C. Lyon. Contributions can be sent to CHAD at 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03766.

The family expresses gratitude to Tender Loving Home Care, Central Vermont Medical Center, Mayo Nursing Home, and CVHHH Hospice for the care provided during Barbara’s illness.
