Fred Robert Harvey died on June 10th, 2019 at 6 o’clock in the evening from congestive heart failure at Barre Gardens in Barre, Vermont. He died with a family member at his side after a brief decline.
Fred was born on December 16th, 1922 the first son and fourth child of Robert Leslie and Mary Edith (Shorey) Harvey. Fred graduated from Plainfield High School and, in June of 1943, he enlisted in the Navy, where he attained the rank of Yeoman Third Class. He served on the USS General Brooke, which, during a trip past Calcutta, survived a major typhoon. He was honorably discharged in May of 1945.
He spent several years teaching in schools around northern Vermont, then used his GI Bill benefit to attend the University of New Mexico. After graduation, he secured a position at the Harvard University Business School library, where he worked from February 1960 until his retirement in March of 1985. He retired to Plainfield, living with his sister, Priscilla, in the family home on Harvey Hill. In his retirement, he was a regular worshipper at Grace Church, where he often played the organ for services.
Fred was a bachelor and is survived by his sister, Barbara, and several generations of nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and ten siblings – Marguerite, Frances, Alice, Dorothy, Irene, William, Florence, Mary, Bessie and Priscilla.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 2 pm at Grace Methodist Church in Plainfield, Vermont. An interment of ashes and military salute will follow at Center Cemetery in Plainfield. All are welcome to attend.
