Sheridan E. Crowningshield

 BARRE CITY – It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the passing of Sheridan Emmitt Crowningshield, 76, a longtime resident of Barre on Friday, January 18, 2019 at his home. A respected and admired part of the community being among the first to help any and all anytime. He was a proud man, true to his beliefs.

Born on October 28, 1942 in Middlebury, he was the son of Donald Buchanan and Gertrude Crowningshield. He attended schools in the Middlebury area. On March 11, 1961, he married Sandra Owen in the Memorial Baptist Church in Middlebury. The two made their home in the Middlebury area for many years and had 5 children before moving to the Barre area in 1975.

Sheridan dedicated his life to the Cornwall, Middlebury, Weybridge, Barre Town and Barre City Fire Departments, working up from pump operator to Deputy Chief and Lieutenant. Sheridan farmed and then built homes and barns. He did many jobs in the electrical, plumbing, heating and refrigeration fields. 

He knew the City of Barre like the back of his hand. His dedication, work ethic and his renowned skills for a combined 35 years for the City showed his commitment to his City. 

Sheridan was never not working, even after retirement. He was always sought out by others to help in projects in their homes and businesses. 

He was a member of the N.R.A., the Canadian Club, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Barre Elks Lodge #1535 and the VFW Post #790, American Legion, and a member of One Credit Union since 1981.

Throughout his life, Sheridan had many hobbies and interests including hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and being at Thunder Road as crew chief to his son Doug’s racing career. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. 

Sheridan’s “happy place” was at the Tremblay Camp in Cabot. Sheridan loved animals of all kinds and cherished his cat pepper. He was an avid gun collector. 

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sandra (Owen) Crowningshield; two daughters Debbie DeForge, and her husband, Allen of Barre; and Lisa Crowningshield (Buck), and her partner, Bill Phelps of West Topsham. Sheridan also had three sons, Doug Crowningshield and Gary Crowningshield, both of Barre; and Christopher Crowningshield of East Middlebury; grandchildren Cody DeForge and his wife, Chelsea of Mooresville NC; Geremy DeForge and his wife, Beth of Reedsburg WI; and Adam DeForge and his wife, Alicia of Creedmoor NC; Eric Beach of Orange, VT; Ashley Collins of Barre; Taylor Crowningshield of Barre; Kayla Crowningshield of Barre; Ryan O. Crowningshield of Barre; Ryan C. Crowningshield and Tyler Crowningshield both of Vergennes as well as 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters Lottie Spear of Sun City, AZ; and Mary Langford of Shushan, NY as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Chester, John, William, and Walt Buchanan.

A memorial service to honor Sheridan’s life will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Barre Elks Lodge on Jefferson Street in Barre. There are no calling hours. His memory will be cherished by all that knew and loved him.

Interment will take place in the Grandview Cemetery in Addison, VT in the spring. A graveside service will be performed to place him at peace next to his beloved mother.
