Ann L. Nelson, 64, for over 35 years a speech therapist who worked with children and families in central VT, Japan, New Zealand and Ireland, combining a vocation she loved with a lifelong passion for living abroad, died on Sept. 28, 2018. She was born on Jan. 17, 1954, at Fort Benning, GA. Ann lived as a young girl in Japan, Germany, Virginia and London before settling in Montpelier. Ann attended schools in Montpelier, graduating in 1972. Ann enrolled at Lyndon State College, where she earned a BA in English. Her Lyndon State studies were interrupted, when she went to study in Denmark. She became fluent in Danish and earned a degree from the University of Odense on the Danish island of Funen. Ann married Preben Hansen, a Dane, and they lived together on a Danish commune. Ann returned to VT to help care for her mother. Her marriage to Preben ended, and Ann finished her studies at Lyndon State before enrolling in the paralegal course. Ann and John Nelson were married in Duxbury, VT, on Dec. 20, 1980. Ann decided to combine her love of language with her enthusiasm for being with young children by pursuing speech language pathology at UVM. She earned an M.A. in speech pathology in 1982 and began her career as an SLP. In 1983, Ann and John’s daughter, Emily, was born. As an SLP, Ann worked for extended periods with young children and their families at schools in Washington County. Ann Nelson is survived by John Nelson, her husband of 38 years; her daughter, Emily and her partner, Erik Moon, of Berlin, VT; and their children. She is also survived by her brothers and sister Paul Harrington and his wife, Nancy, of Middlesex; Robert Harrington and his wife, Denise, of Dover, NH; and Harriet Johnson, of Montpelier. She leaves three nieces and three nephews, a brother-in-law, Robert Nelson, of Palos Verdes, CA; and the families of his four sons.

The memorial service for Ann L. Nelson, 64, who died Sept. 28, 2018, will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Christ Church on State Street in Montpelier.
