Helene Lang passed away on Aug. 21, 2018. Born May 3, 1931, in Lancaster, MA, she attended Lancaster public schools before enrolling at Worcester State College in MA (BEd 1953). Further graduate studies led to a MEd (1957) and a Doctorate (1970) from BU. From 1960-64, she taught in public schools in MA and for the U.S. Navy at Guantanamo Bay and Sicily. From 1967 until 2001, her career as an educator was fulfilled at UVM as a professor of literacy and literature, with specialties in reading, gifted education and library science. A lifelong quest for learning, and a curiosity of places and people, brought great richness to her life through travels across the globe. Between 1986 and June 2018, she enriched the state of Vermont through her work with The Vermont Humanities Council as a leader of countless book discussions. Leadership roles and active participation in numerous professional organizations brought great satisfaction. The love of her life was her family: husband Richard D. Lang with whom she was married for 62 years; and their three sons and daughters-in-law Dustin (Christine) SC and VT; Larson (Catherine) Glendale, MO; and Derryl (Jennifer) Hong Kong and VT. Her five grandchildren brought her great joy and pride. A memorial service will be held at All Souls Interfaith Gathering, 291 Bostwick Farm Rd., Shelburne, VT, on 9/25, 2PM.
