COLONEL MAURICE H. SMITH, 106, died on Feb. 4, 2018, at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing in Berlin. He was born in Hyde Park, VT, on July 26, 1911, the son of Homer C. Smith and Mabel (Wade) Smith. He graduated from Peoples Academy, Morrisville, VT, in 1930. He followed his older brother, Phillip Smith (deceased), to Norwich University where he graduated in 1934. He married Isabel (Daniels) Smith on Jan. 2, 1939, in Littleton, NH. Colonel Smith was a high school teacher at Barton Academy in Barton, VT, for several years until World War II. While he was on a one-month active duty at Fort Devens, he applied for active duty in the Army. He was assigned to the First Armored Division. Subsequently, he served with the First, Fourth and the Tenth Armored Divisions, and eventually in 1944, served as supervisor of instruction in the tank department of the Armored School at Fort Knox. Mo from active duty in 1954. He moved back to VT and joined the staff of Norwich University, in Northfield, VT. He was on staff for 18 years until his retirement in 1973. Survivors include his son, William Smith and his wife, Pamela, of Williamstown, VT; his daughter, Sandy Spira, of Melville, NY; one granddaughter and three grandsons; one great-granddaughter and three great-grandsons; one nephew; and two nieces.
