Colonel Maurice H. Smith, 106, died Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing in Berlin. He was born in Hyde Park, Vermont on July 26, 1911, the son of Homer C. Smith and Mabel (Wade) Smith. He graduated from Peoples Academy, Morrisville, Vermont in 1930. He followed his older brother, Phillip Smith (deceased) to Norwich University where he graduated in 1934.

He married Isabel (Daniels) Smith on January 2, 1939 in Littleton, New Hampshire. Colonel Smith was a high school teacher at Barton Academy in Barton, Vermont for several years until WWII. While he was on a one-month active duty at Fort Devens, he applied for active duty in the army. He was assigned to the First Armored Division. Subsequently, he served with the First, Fourth, and the Tenth Armored Divisions, and eventually in 1944, served as supervisor of instruction in the tank department of the Armored School at Fort Knox.

From the Armored School Colonel Smith was ordered to Hawaii with a flame-thrower group and served as the head of the school.
After the armistice, Mo was assigned to a tour in Germany and attended the Nuremberg Trials. After his tour, he was sent to Japan in 1949, to serve in logistical command. In 1952, Mo was sent to the Fifth Army Headquarters in Chicago and retired from active duty in 1954. He moved back to Vermont and joined the staff of Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont. He was on staff for 18 years until his retirement in 1973.

Survivors include his son William Smith and his wife, Pamela of Williamstown, Vermont; his daughter, Sandy Spira of Melville, New York; one granddaughter, Cindy Spira, of  Patchogue, New York; three grandsons, Keith Spira of Dixs Hills, New York, Wade Smith of Alstead, New Hampshire, and Daniel Smith of Northfield, Vermont; one great-granddaughter and three great-grandsons; one nephew, Charles Daniels of Texas; two nieces, Mary Boyd Troy-Bunker of Concord, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Tully of Texas. He was predeceased by his wife Isabel Smith and his brother, Phillip Smith.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel at Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Norwich University, 158 Harmon Drive, Northfield, VT 05663. Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is in charge.
