GEORGE JOSEPH “BUD” CAYIA JR., 78, of Ocala, Florida, formerly of Barre City, Washington and Barre Town, passed away Nov. 26, 2017, at Ocala Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness, with his wife at his bedside. George grew up in Barre, graduated from Spaulding High School, class of 1957. He served one year in the Vermont National Guard and then enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1958. He served 20 years in the Navy, was an exemplary sailor, having been designated the Harbor Clearance Unit Two “Sailor of the Year” award in 1973. After retiring in 1978, he returned to VT to raise his family. George worked at Malden Mills as an electrician assistant for 13 years and then went to Central Vermont Hospital. He had a genuine heart and loved his family more than anything. He loved watching his grandkids, whether it was bowling, basketball, baseball or soccer. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vivian, of Ocala; sons Bryan F. and wife Peggi, of Barre, Paul J. and wife Tammy, of Troutman, NC, and daughter Stephanie M. Cayia, of Barre; sister Joanne C. Desmarais; grandchildren Scott and wife Amanda Jewett, of Barre, Steven Cayia, of Barre, Ashlie and Jonathan Cayia, of Honey Brook, PA, Joshua Lacourse, of Troutman, NC, Baylee and Camden Boucher, of Barre; many great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Gene and Judy Trevathan, of Augusta, GA, and Larry and Nuran Trevathan, of Turkey.
