Alice Patterson Walbridge passed away peacefully with family at her side at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on September 21, 2017. She was 96 years old, and had a rich, fulfilling life. Alice was an inspiration to all who knew her. Born Alice Nadeau in Farnham, Quebec in 1921, Alice came with her family to Websterville, Vermont when she was a young child so her father could work in the granite industry. In 1941, Alice married Harold Patterson of Middlesex. Together, Alice and Harold had three children – Sally, Steve and Linda. In 1953, Alice lost both her husband and infant daughter to long-term illness. Alice became a working mother, raising her two young children, Sally and Steve, in their Middlesex home. She acquired woodshop training, becoming a skilled worker at utilizing large power tools. She also found employment caring for other people at Washington County Mental Health. In 1970, Alice married Howard Walbridge, and they built their home in East Montpelier. Alice and Howard traveled widely throughout the United States and Canada in their Airstream trailer. In retirement with Howard, Alice enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafts, visiting with family, neighbors and friends, and watching wildlife. Alice and Howard had a long and happy marriage until he passed away at the age of 90 in 2008. Alice is pre-deceased by her parents, Napoleon and Caroline (Leblanc) Nadeau, and brothers Roland, Armand and Harry Nadeau; her two husbands, Harold Patterson and Howard Walbridge; her daughters, Linda Patterson and Sally (Patterson) Howard; and stepson, Robin Walbridge. Alice is survived by her son, Steve Patterson and daughter-in-law, Sally Cavanagh Patterson; her granddaughter, Sarah Patterson, all of Middlesex; and her sister, Theresa Boudreau, of Rutland. She is also survived by son-in-law Greg Howard and his wife, Susan, of Florida; grandson Chris Howard and his wife, Ann, of Michigan and their children, Olivia and Alex; and granddaughter Nancy Terlep, and her husband, Steve, of Georgia and their children, Kaley and Allyson. In addition, Alice leaves behind stepchildren Lucille Jensen and her husband, Peter, of Massachusetts; Dede Gosikowa and her husband and children of Poland; and Robin’s wife, Claudia McCann of Florida and her daughter, Shelly. Also surviving are step grandchildren Katy Stohlberg of Duxbury and her daughter, Bella; and Matthew Stohlberg of Toronto and his wife, Sarah, as well as Alice’s many beloved nieces and nephews and many, many friends. The family wishes to thank Staff at Woodridge Nursing Home for the tender, loving care and friendship they gave Alice during the last several years of her life, and the Gary Home Staff for their care and friendship of Alice during the time of her prior residence there. Alice was a long-time parishioner at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Montpelier. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, September 30 at St. Augustine’s. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to “The Activities Fund” at Woodridge Nursing Home, P.O. Box 550, Barre, Vermont 05641.
