With support from Mayor Hollar and the City Council, Montpelier recently earned the bronze level “bicycle-friendly community” award from the League of American Bicyclists. I’m writing to clarify what this distinction means.
Essentially, Montpelier has been recognized for making a commitment to becoming friendly to bicyclists and for taking some initial steps in this direction. It doesn’t mean that Montpelier’s work is done. All who bicycle in Montpelier know there are numerous ways in which the city can make bicycling safer and easier. Before Montpelier can advance to silver, gold, or platinum levels, it must demonstrate that it is making progress in various categories.
Montpelier’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC) is learning how best to work with city departments and other advisory committees to make Montpelier a more livable community. The MBAC meets on the first Thursday of the month at 8:00 am in the community room of the Police Department. All are welcome to attend these meetings. For more information, please feel free to contact me via 225-8904 or Nancy@VTBikePed.org.
Thank you.
