Prepare Now for when the Vermont Yankee Money Faucet is Turned off

To the Editor:

It’s good to see that Windham County is still receiving millions of dollars per year in economic development funding from Vermont Yankee (WRC receives second round of renewable energy grant funding, Oct. 3). Since its opening in the early 1970s, Vermont Yankee has provided funding for countless state and local programs. Windham County, in particular, has been a huge beneficiary of this generosity, which continues to go above and beyond the closed plant’s significant payroll and tax contributions.

Of course, this type of financial support won’t be there indefinitely. With that in mind, business and community leaders throughout the county should rally behind NorthStar’s decommissioning plan and prepare for Vernon’s next big employer at a restored Vermont Yankee site in the future.

Sincerely,

George Clain
