ASSELIN, GERARD ADRIEN, 78, of Northfield Falls, died on August 6, of complications from Alzheimer’s. He was born in Biddeford, Maine, on March 24, 1935, to Joseph and Rose (Duquette) Asselin. He married Julienne Coulombe in 1957. Jerry graduated from Biddeford’s St. Louis High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, N.J., from 1954 to 1957, and then attended Gorham State Teachers College in Gorham, Maine, on the GI Bill. After completing his Bachelor of Arts, Jerry began a life deeply committed to education, with teaching positions in the Cohasset, Mass., elementary schools from 1961 to 1967. He earned his MS in education at Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1966. In 1967, Jerry moved his family to Northfield, where he had been appointed principal of the elementary schools. He was then appointed assistant superintendent of schools in Northfield, working in that capacity until 1970 when he accepted a position with the VT State Department of Education. At the department, Jerry was responsible first for federal assistance programs for the disadvantaged, and later was made director of adult and vocational education and manager of career and lifelong learning; he also served on the board of directors of the Vermont State Credit Union. Jerry, who held passionate views on the value of vocational education, was a member of the board of directors for the National Assoc. of State Directors of Vocational-Technical Education and was recognized as a leader on the Legislative Policy Committee. He temporarily acted as deputy commissioner of education. Jerry retired from the department in 1996. Jerry was an active member of Northfield’s St. John the Evangelist Parish, where he was a lector, and the Rotary Club, for which he was treasurer for some years. He and his wife assisted with the Meals on Wheels Program. Also in their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling throughout the region, especially to the coast of Maine. Besides his beloved wife of 56 years, Jerry is survived by his sons, Mark Asselin of Bethesda, Md. and wife, Son Vuong, Vance Asselin of Barre and wife, Meredith, Brian Asselin of Northfield Falls, and Jon Asselin of Jericho and wife, Jean; daughter Roxane Boliver of Barre and husband, Keith; eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; his brother Laurent Ames, of Ocala, Fla., and wife, Sherry; brothers-in-law Raymond Collard and Gérard Coulombe and his wife, Juliette; and numerous nephews and nieces.
