PHILLIPS, DIANE MARIE, 75, a former East Barre and Washington resident, died December 13, at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare in Burlington. She was born May 19, 1938, in Barre, and was raised by Clarence and Katie (Ainsworth) Taylor. Diane attended the Spring House School in East Barre, and graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in 1955. She later attended nursing school at Brigham Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Boston. Diane made her home in East Barre and Washington. For many years, she was employed by the state of Vermont in the Unemployment and Training Department, retiring as a supervisor in 1995. She was a dedicated member of the Barre Congregational Church. Diane sang in the church’s choir and served the church in many capacities and on committees. Diane was also an active member of the American Legion. She served as Unit 10 president, vice president, historian, and on various committees during her 51 years of membership. Diane also served in multiple roles, including department president, state historian, planning conventions or anything she could do to help the veterans. Diane enjoyed playing the piano daily, playing hymns for herself or anyone that wanted to sit and listen at any time. She shared her love of music with everyone that enjoyed listening. Another love of her life was her cats. She wanted to make sure that all animals were cared for and safe. She supported proudly all the work the Humane Society does. Survivors include her sisters-in-law, Barbara Taylor, of East Barre, and Shirley Moulton, of Hanover, N.H.; her niece, Kathy Pelletier, and husband, Carlton; her beloved friends David Cary, Rachel Christie and Christine Litchfield; several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Raymond Taylor and Carlyle Taylor; a sister, June Maurais; two nephews, Rocky Maurais and Darell Maurais; and a grandnephew, Jeff Maurais, predeceased her.
