GARBATI, ESTA RUTH, 89, formerly of South Burlington and Montpelier, died December 7, at Woodridge Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 22, 1924, in South Ryegate, the daughter of Amerigo and Maria (Pacini) Garbati. Esta was a graduate of Woodsville High School in 1942. She lived in Miami, Fla., for several years, where she worked for a charter airline. In this role she traveled all over the world. She returned to Vermont, where she was employed as a supervisor for the state of Vermont, Department of Motor Vehicles. She retired in 1988. In earlier years, Esta was an active member of St. Augustine Parish in Montpelier, where she volunteered as a bookkeeper and served on the finance committee. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Augustine 976, where she served in various leadership positions. She was the founder of the St. Augustine soup kitchen and helped with its operation for many years. She also held positions on the CDA state level, including state regent from 1992-1994. Esta had been a Sister of Mercy associate since 1991. Esta is survived by two nieces, Selma “Pat” Hickey, Las Vegas, and Sylvia McElrath, Sweet Home, Ore.; nephew Joey Barquin, Sarasota, Fla.; great-nephews and niece Shawn Edwards, of Sacramento, Calif., and Matthew Hickey and Crystal Edwards, of Las Vegas; and devoted friend Rita Poulin, of Barre and Zephyrhills, Fla. Esta was predeceased by her siblings, Guido; Secondo; Anselmo, Aurora Barquin; Evelina Sagris; and a nephew, Don, and great-nephew, Brian.
