GARBACIK, DR. THEODORE J.

GARBACIK, DR. THEODORE J., 68, of Barre City, died November 2 at Rowan Court Health & Rehabilitation Center. Ted was born June 10, 1940, in Hazelton, Pa., the son of John and Mary (Zion) Garbacik. He received his education in Hazelton and graduated from Hazelton High School in 1957. He attended Penn State College and received his degree in pre-med in 1961 and a degree in chemistry in 1962. Ted moved to Vermont where he attended UVM. He taught at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., from 1968 to 1969. He returned to UVM and received his Ph.D. in 1970. Following graduation, Dr. Garbacik was employed by the state of Vermont in the water resources department as a chemist. In 1976, he earned his post doctorate at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, Minn. He retired in 1980 because of complications of multiple sclerosis. On Dec. 2, 1967, he married E. Sheridan Boomhower at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Waitsfield. Dr. and Mrs. Garbacik made their home in Barre since 1971, and became involved with community and school affairs. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, St. Monica Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus of Barre and was Cub Master for the Boy Scouts of America. Ted played clarinet in the St. Ann's Band in Freeland, Pa., Hazel Township Band and also the Burlington Band. He served as president of the P.T.A. at Mathewson School in Barre. Ted was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with a good sense of humor and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Sheri Garbacik of Barre; five children, Joel Garbacik and wife Corrina of South Barre, Tadeusz Garbacik and wife Caitlin of Rochester, N.Y., Heather Savickas and husband Eric of Baumholder, Germany, Nicolaas Garbacik and wife Robin of Berlin; Gretchen Garbacik and fiancÈ T.J. Thomas of Victor, Idaho; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Cholod, of Bensalem, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews. Ted is predeceased by his parents and grandson, Oaklyn Garbacik.
