MOWEN, GEORGE WILBUR

MOWEN, GEORGE WILBUR, of Chelsea, born Nov. 24, 1912, passed away August 11, in his 99th year. His wife, Kathryn Ten Eyck Mowen, having been married to George for 73 years, predeceased him in 2009. He was the son of Fredrick Daniel Mowen and Mary McClain Mowen, both of Plainfield, N.J. He is survived by a daughter, Lynn Likus, and husband, Paul, of Springfield; a son, David Mowen, of Bath, Pa., and his wife, Trish; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. George and Kathryn were married on July 17, 1936. His lifetime occupation was as an accomplished carpenter and cabinetmaker, with a passion for the architecture of classic New England structures. George's spare time was dedicated to his love of horses, the vehicles they pulled, restoration and preservation of colonial buildings, and his fine hand in the painting of architectural and landscape scenes. Above all material interests, however, was his love of family. After having been schooled, apprenticed and married in Plainfield, N.J., he decided a rural life was to be the healthy future of his family and animals. After World War II, they moved to the farmland of Hunterdon County, N.J. Always active in church affairs, George served as both a deacon and elder. When it was evident the Hunterdon County needed its own hospital, George was active in the initial planning of community support and fundraising. After retirement, at age 70, George and Kathryn packed up everything, including horses, and headed for Vermont. It has been here in Chelsea for an additional 29 years, amongst his beloved New England architecture and its people, that George and Kathryn lived out their lives involved in a community they felt welcomed them warmly. A memorial service is planned for Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at 2pm in the United Church of Chelsea.
