Join Friends of the Aldrich

(by Christine Litchfield President, Friends of the Aldrich Public L - October 15, 2008)

Editor:

Hopefully many of you were able to visit the Aldrich Public Library on Sunday, September 21, for our Centennial celebration. You were able to take part in various crafts, listen to fabulous musicians, watch Marko the Magician and eat birthday cake (imagine - 100 years old!). Our public library is a gem, one to treasure for the next 100 years. The Board of Trustees, the staff and all the volunteers truly work hard to provide our community with many resources and opportunities. We should be grateful to all of them, especially Karen Lane, library director, and Nancy Pope, president of the trustees.

The Friends of the Aldrich Public Library, the oldest library ëfriends’ group in the state, is another important part in the life of the Aldrich. Our whole goal is to earn money for the library. We donate a sum each year for new books, audio collections, and computer software. We fund the Youth Summer Reading Program, the monthly Senior Day programs, the Authors by the Park series, the Book Discussion Group, the Young Adults Poetry Slam, a Teens Graphic Novel Discussion group and other worthwhile library activities. This summer we planted a flower garden to adorn the granite sign on the front lawn.

We are able to do all this because of our fundraising activities: the Chinese Banquet and Auction, held annually for the Chinese New Year (save January 24, 2009), and our annual Book Sale during Barre’s Homecoming Weekend in July. The Friends also sponsor a monthly theme basket, featuring an autographed book with various related items. We are donating money to plant an elm tree on the library lawn as part of the Centennial celebration.

You have a chance to be a part of this wonderful organization! We are looking for a few more dedicated members to be part of our fundraisers and help with decisions about how to spend the money we earn. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to decide how to spend funds to help our library keep its vibrance and vitality?

If you are interested in joining our group, please call either Karen Lane at the library (476-7550) or me (476-6496). We meet at the library at 7:00 PM on the last Tuesday of the month. You would be most welcome and I know your contribution would have a lasting impression on the Aldrich.
