Strong Senate Incumbents

(by Cathy Hilgendorf Barre Town - October 15, 2008)

Editor:

Washington County voters are fortunate to have a large, varied, and strong slate of candidates from which to choose our three state senators. I don’t know them all, but I know positive things about those I do.

I am writing in support of our three incumbents: State Senators Cummings, Doyle, and Scott. Whatever our party affiliation might be, we want our legislators to be respected and respectful, involved, effective, and mindful of our needs. Senators Cummings, Doyle, and Scott embody those qualities and have the benefit of the political experience to know how to get things done. In this particular area of politics, we actually do NOT need change.

William ìBillî Doyle is a valuable resource for all legislators, who know that he is a wealth of knowledge about our state and the nuances of lawmaking and points of order on the Senate floor. His memory, wit, and intelligence are poorly served by his aging body, yet he is as effective a legislator as those who bustle more quickly through the halls of the state house. Most importantly, Bill gives careful thought to committee work and is a champion for minimizing the politics in education policy.

The party affiliations of our other two incumbent senators, Ann Cummings and Phil Scott, are less relevant than their position and credibility in state government. Washington County senators chair TWO of the powerful ìmoney committees,î and we should support them with our votes, to keep it that way.
