Barre Streets Need Repair
Editor:
With regard to the Street Reconstruction fund of $300,000, it is imperative to me which streets would be funded for repairing and repaving and sidewalk improvement. I am very sure that the city engineering office has a listing of these streets and sidewalks. Each street (named) should designate cost man hours, equipment and such, i.e. cost 10,500 hours, for example. This information should be given to council for review.
It has been over 15 years since French Street connecting Washington to Hill has been in need of extreme repairs, and it has been placed on the back burner. A dangerous street where residents on surrounding streets do not use it. A street of potholes (for years), a manhole sunk so deep, a person's car flies. Visibility is so limited driving from Hill to French because of overgrown trees and shrubbery and trying to avoid the manhole, a car will move to the oncoming lane, causing a large number of near collisions. This is very common. I won?t comment on the sidewalks.
Yet, approximately four years ago, and in Barre City's Annual Report four years ago, work was begun on the Farwell St. project. Included was removal of shale in an effort to start to widen the street. Sidewalks were torn up laying sewer and water pipes, mainly to have flush toilets at the ball field. The money was not forthcoming to continue the project. The cost so far was approximately $10,000. Completion of this project?
The City has to be indebted to Mayor Thom Lauzon. It was he that restored the Barre Municipal Pool to its original beauty and safety. See page 22 of your city report for gratitude to all the citizen volunteers, Vt. Dept. of Corrections, Capital Earthmoving, Pelkey Sandblasting, Lajeunesse Construction, E.F. Wall, Norway and Sons Electric, Lajeunesse Interiors, Johnson Paving, and Felch Electric.
Families enjoyed a late summer swim. First in Fitness certainly contributed to this great day. There's still work to be done on the recreational areas.
We have a great city.
