Healthcare is a Human Right

Healthcare is a Human Right

  Editor:

I have been following with much interest, the recent debate on healthcare. Even though the U.S. is a signatory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which anniversary we observed last December 10, it still treats healthcare as a commodity instead of a human right.

I believe we as Vermonters need to join together to let our leaders in Montpelier and Washington know that healthcare is a human right, not a privilege reserved only for the wealthy who can afford it. The best way to achieve this important goal is to contact your legislators and tell them to vote on one of Dr. William Hsiao's plans, to be presented by February 11, 2011. Everyone needs healthcare, regardless of their "lifestyle." In particular, everyone needs primary and preventive care, which can both improve health and reduce the need for expensive chronic care.

The idea that we can control the cost of healthcare by denying care is backwards. We can control the cost of healthcare best by providing primary and preventive care, by eliminating healthcare profiteering and by eliminating administrative waste.
