Community Support Central to Footrace Success

(by Week of September 10, 2008 - September 10, 2008)
Editor:

The Northfield Savings Bank "Flying Pig Footrace" committee would like to thank each and every runner, volunteer, sponsor and cheering community member for making 2008 our most successful of the race's thirty-one year history.
Since 1978, the race has been the unofficial kick off to the old-fashioned fun of the Northfield Labor Day festivities. The sights and sounds of a small carnival filled the air as athletes young and old prepared for their races. This year a record number of racers toed the starting line: 118 kids and 281 adults in the 31st year of this event. Runners ranged from the age of 5 to 76 years young.
We are so proud of how much the community participated, and this is what makes it a truly special event. More than 60 volunteers from the local community, Norwich University and the bank helped with race registration, traffic control, water stations and more.
Much more. The Northfield High School boy's soccer team members jogged alongside the youngsters in the 1-mile kids race in a show of support. The Central Vermont Runners Club provided technical support and race timing. Members from the local Boys & Girls Clubs handed out prizes at the awards ceremony.  Northfield Savings Bank pledged to donate $5 per runner to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Montpelier and Northfield, and decided to "round up," increasing its total donation to $3,000!
In case you'd like to start warming up for next year, the race is set for Saturday, August 29, 2009. You have plenty of time to train. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Steve Page, Tim Barre
and the entire Flying Pig Footrace committee
