MARTIN, ELWIN “TED,” 93
MARTIN, ELWIN “TED,” 93, of Northfield, N.H., died August 16 at home. He was born Dec. 11, 1916, in Windsor, the son of Charles Martin and Lyda Nichols Martin. Ted worked in the city of Barre engineering department for 40 years, retiring as city engineer and director of public works December 1978. Alice Clogston of Williamstown and Ted were married on Nov. 17, 1944, at Christ Church in Montpelier. In his earlier years, he was interested in sports, playing baseball for the Barre American Legion which went to the New England finals. Ted also played in the Industrial League and for the semi-pro Barre Americans. Ted was a member of the Rock of Ages 1938 Vermont State Softball Champions, the goalie for the Barre Hockey Club (Vermont state champions in 1941) which went on to play in the New England playoffs in the Boston Garden. Ted was manager for the Elks baseball team in the early 1950s where he became a lifetime member of Barre Lodge #1535. He had an avid interest in fishing. Ted enlisted Oct. 7, 1942, in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the 81st N.C.B., serving in both the European and the Asiatic Pacific Theaters until he was discharged from the U.S.N. Personnel Separation Center in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 23, 1945. Ted lived for over 50 years at 3 Hale St. in Barre but relocated in 2008 to Northfield, N.H. Survivors include two sons, Stephen R. Martin, his wife, Sandra, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., John C. Martin of Post Mills and a daughter, Marlene Desjardins and her husband, Peter of Northfield, N.H. Survivors also include seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His wife predeceased him Aug. 13, 1986.
