ATHERTON, SHELDON CLARK, 95


ATHERTON, SHELDON CLARK, 95, a longtime resident of Barre, died January 15 at the home of his grandchildren, Christopher and Cheryl Atherton in Williamstown. Born on March 2, 1914, in East Barre, he was the son of Oscar and LilliaBelle (Foster) Atherton. He attended East Barre Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1932. On July 14, 1935, he married Aurora Ambrosini in Barre. For a few years, they made their home in East Barre before moving to Barre. Eventually, they settled in their Essex Street home where they lived for 66 years. Sheldon worked as a sawyer in the granite industry for several granite manufacturers in Barre including Comolli Granite Company and Associated Memorials. He retired from Cetrangelo Finishing Works in Northfield in 1976. In earlier years, he was an assistant coach with his son, Glenn in the Green Mountain Little League Girls' Softball Association and a member of the Bill Town Moonshiners Snowmobile Club. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling and also playing cards. His greatest joy though was spending time with his family at his "Camp Rora-Shel" in East Orange. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Aurora Atherton; his daughter, Norine Dennis and husband, Robert of Punta Gorda, Fla.; his daughter-in-law, Norma Atherton of Williamstown; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Orcelia Safford of Sharon; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Glenn; brothers, Gene, Milo, Alpha, Sherwood, and Reginald; and sisters, Velma Zinneker and Barbara Kobylus.
