A Happy Ending, Thanks to the Community

This story has a happy ending: Lily, our little terrier, is safely home after surviving 4 nights in the Vermont woods. Now as she snores on her favorite bed, I wonder if she knows that she lives in a community of people who heroically and tirelessly rallied to find her. Does she know that her neighbors on Maggies Way regularly combed through their yards, peeked under their porches, and monitored their compost bins for signs of her? Or that they left their porch lights on at night like beacons in hopes of summoning her? Could she know that friends took time from their busy lives to forge through the woods looking for her, calling and clapping and whistling? Or about the daily phone calls of concern for her and encouragement for us?
Certainly she knows about the simple act of kindness that finally brought her home. She must recall being carefully lifted from the side of Barnes Hill Road at dusk by a perfect stranger. A “perfect” stranger, indeed.
Lily’s homecoming is the kind of small miracle that comes from a collective community effort. We are so grateful to everyone for their help and hope, and so fortunate to live among neighbors and friends who care enough to turn the tides in favor of a small brown dog.
Thank you.
