Central VT Adult Basic Ed Welcomes Young and Old

Editor:

May is Older Americans Month, and I am delighted to note that over the past two years, Central Vermont Adult Basic Education's enrollment of students ages 50 and older has notably increased, particularly in the computer lab at CVABE's Barre Learning Center. CVABE offers computer literacy classes at its Learning Centers throughout Washington, Orange and Lamoille Counties which meet the specific needs of students ages 50 and older.

Classes designed for the older learner encourage more seniors to enroll in adult education and literacy programs. Giving these students the option of learning with their peers increases their chance for success - whether preparing to re-enter the job market, learning to email their grandchildren, or simply mastering the mysteries of today's Internet.

In addition to those coming to CVABE as students, we are grateful to be working with a large cadr of older community members who share their lifetime worth of knowledge with CVABE's students and support our general operations as volunteers.

Older students and volunteers are just part of those who participate in CVABE on a regular basis. CVABE provides free, individualized adult education and literacy instruction to a wide age range of students, currently spanning 16 - 93! Offering programs in basic reading, writing, math, computer skills, high school achievement, workplace skills, and English for Speakers of Other Languages, CVABE encourages everybody, regardless of age, to get involved. We welcome you as a student, a volunteer, a community partner, an advocate. It's never too late!

Like a Butterfly

Editor:

Looking out of my home office window one day, I watched a butterfly doing its erratic flight. It appeared to be going here, no, going there, no, neither way. Where was it going? Where would it light? What did it want to do? What, if anything, did it seek?

The butterfly's antics brought to mind how much the political maneuverings resembled the uncertain and puzzling directions exhibited by an insect. An insect whose life is limited and quite effectively should be applied to some politicians' terms in office.

I couldn't help but revisit the theory that nature could teach us wisely if we only examined more closely the working of its ways.

Barre, Nice Work During Green Up Week!

I have to say that I am really proud of the way that the citizens of Barre quietly went about cleaning the roadsides and parks in the city. People filled almost 300 green up bags last week, and many street sides that were strewn with a collection of the winters litter are clean once again. Special thanks go to the city workers who collected the bags around the city.

Although this last week was a great effort, it is important that we continue to keep our roadsides clean and that we take an active role in making Barre a vibrant city to live in, and an inviting city to visit.

I am amazed that there is not constant discussion of Charlotte Dennett' candidacy for Attorney General. Other than the Presidential choice, I believe this is the most important election race in all of America. President Bush's misleading of Americans into starting a war in Iraq, which has cost America 4,000+ plus of it's sons and daughters, much more than a trillion dollars, and has depleted our country's finances to the point that President Bush had to peddle 500 billion dollars worth of Treasury IOU's to communist China, was a grossly criminal, and immoral act. The illegality of this act, must be dealt with, to prevent future Presidents from acting illegally with no thought to legal repercussions. My family fought the English in Nova Scotia, and then again in Massachusetts, in order to make sure we lived in a country that represented us truthfully, legally, and morally. The current administration has been grossly, and purposefully negligent, on all three of those issues, and there must be recourse. Please vote for Charlotte Dennett for Vermont Attorney General, we owe it to our soldiers and their grieving families, to the families of hundreds of thousands of civilian Iraqis killed, and to our children, so that they understand that right and wrong apply to all Americans. For the sake of our souls, I hope we all do what is clearly the right thing!
