In Search of Stolen Lions

Last Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 4:15pm I was home. I work from home. I happened to look out my window and see a grown man stealing two concrete lions from the end of my driveway. I live on the intersection of East Hill Road and the Chelsea Road in Brookfield. The lions have adorned the beginning, or end, (depending on which way you are headed in the driveway) since we bought the place in 2004. The lions have no great value, there is no fancy metal in them, they are just important to us. The lions have been a landmark for many people giving directions to their homes who live around here. They are sitting up with one paw in the air. They are about 2 feet high, concrete in color and weigh about 150 lbs a piece.
My mind has made up many stories about the thief. My guess is that they wanted to either adorn their own driveway, or have given them to someone as a present. A stolen present, what a nice gift! The good news is that if they show up somewhere, a lot of people know they are missing. The better news is that the thief (at least one of them) was seen, the truck he was driving sped away driving another neighbor off the road, thus getting a good description. The best news is that the two sheriffs that stopped here also see the lions as a landmark and are keeping their eyes opened for them and the truck.
The bad news is that I feel violated and un-trusting. I know that 98% of the people on this planet are good, it is the 2% that are horrible and ruin it for the rest of us. If any of the 98% good people on this planet (well at least here in central Vermont), see our lions, will they either call us at 279-2139, or the sheriffs department of Orange County at 685-4875.
