MAGNE, HENRY JOSEPH, 88


MAGNE, HENRY JOSEPH, 88, formerly of Montpelier, died February 21 at his residence in Palmetto, Fla. surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born on March 19, 1920, in Montpelier, the son of Romeo and Ernesta (Abbiati) Magne. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1938. Joe was granted a full football scholarship to Dartmouth College. Instead he declined the scholarship and chose to work for Pratt Whitney as an aircraft engine tester. In August of 1942, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force as a bomber pilot during World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for the courageous missions he completed during that time. He ended his military career with the rank of captain. On June 28, 1945, he married Marie K. Flannery in a Catholic ceremony in Columbus, Miss., where he was stationed. Joe and Marie spend the next 33 years in Montpelier raising their loving children of two daughters and a son. He worked for New England Telephone for 33 years. In 1978, Joe and Marie moved to Moody Beach, Maine. Joe is survived by his daughters, Sandra B. Garner and husband Darryl, of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Sherry LaPrade and husband Andre of Joe's Pond; son David J. Magne and wife Colleen of Middlesex; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, and his wife Marie predeceased him. A memorial service will be held on June 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Guare and Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier VT 05602. Internment and military honors will immediately follow the service at Hope Cemetery in Barre. A luncheon reception will follow at the Montpelier Elks at 1 p.m.
