Unified Sports Bring Students Together in Northfield
An exciting new program was started this past year at the Northfield elementary, middle and high schools. This was the first year the Northfield schools had hosted a Unified Sports Team through the Vermont Special Olympics.
Unified teams bring together students with and without disabilities. Unified athletes develop skills, are challenged through competition, and have fun, too.
The first team of nine students was a unified snowshoe team, and this spring, a team of 14 students was added for bocce.
The Northfield team competed in its first statewide competition on March 18th at the Suicide Six Ski area in Woodstock, and the summer games for Unified Bocce were held on June 5th at the University of Vermont.
The Unified Sports program is offered statewide and many schools participate. The program has proved very beneficial for Northfield students, and organizers hope the program will continue to grow in the future.
